The concept of Alternative Research Outcomes (AROs) has been introduced and developed to promote research activities or artifacts that act as new endpoints in the research timeline by taking alternative forms of knowledge, such as audio and video documentaries, zines, public workshops and exhibitions, DIY tutorials, and many more. AROs translate and communicate embodied, situated, and relational insights in accessible and engaging forms tailored to specific audiences. As researchers who are practicing AROs, we pursue “unaligned” values, such as fluidity, community-focused values and objectives, and responsibility; dimensions that traditional knowledge-creation practices in academia often struggle to capture.
This meet-up aims to build on this trajectory by convening a growing community of researchers and practitioners who share a passion for creating alternative endpoints for HCI research. We invite all CHI attendees, ranging from early-career researchers and students to senior researchers and practitioners who are seeking new dissemination formats for their work in creative ways, or who experiment with non-traditional research outputs such as public exhibitions, creative pieces, and performances. We hope this meet-up becomes a platform for communication, networking, and community-building, where attendees can reflect on and discuss open questions about AROs.
Share stories of successes and failures of AROs
ARO examples from different contexts and forms
Reflect on and discuss open questions around AROs
This meet-up will be organized as an open, interactive environment with multiple activity stations running simultaneously. We invite all CHI attendees for a quick drop-in or to have deeper conversations with organizers and other attendees.
Add your own success or failure stories to our growing Story Wall. See how other CHI attendees are dedicated to or envisioning the alternative endpoints of HCI research.
Place your ARO interests and region on a large collaborative map. The map will provide a visual overview of where AROs emerge and help attendees spot others working in similar or adjacent areas.
Take a break from the busy conference schedule! Draft your own ARO from your research into a quick sketch. Discuss your concept and connect with others to further develop your ideas.

What would be the proper ways of acknowledging shared authorship for AROs?
What are the validity and impacts of AROs, within and beyond academia?
How to adapt AROs in the academic ecosystem?
How do AROs challenge traditional academic processes, such as authorship, peer reviews, citation counts or impact factors?
